Overview
This spotlight session explores the key learning from the Safeguarding Adult Review (SAR) in relation to Marie, focusing on how risk accumulates when domestic abuse, substance use, mental ill-health and disengagement intersect.
The session draws on national learning from Safeguarding Adult Reviews and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) work, alongside locally significant learning for North Yorkshire.
Particular attention is given to recognising and responding to domestic abuse and suicidality, the interaction between the Mental Capacity Act and Mental Health Act, culturally informed practice with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
The session is designed to support practitioners across agencies to recognise patterns of cumulative risk, reflect on key practice episodes, and strengthen professional curiosity and multi-agency responses.
Aims of the session
· To support practitioners to understand how multiple risks can interact and escalate over time.
· To improve recognition of key practice episodes where safeguarding action or escalation may be required.
· To strengthen understanding of domestic abuse and VAWG as core safeguarding issues for adults.
· To promote culturally competent and trauma-informed practice, particularly when working with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities.
Desired outcomes
· Improved professional curiosity and confidence in responding to cumulative risk.
· Earlier and more proportionate safeguarding responses at key practice moments.
· Greater consistency in how disengagement and repeated help-seeking are understood across agencies.
· Stronger, more culturally informed practice when working with adults at risk.
· Enhanced shared understanding across agencies of learning from the Marie SAR and its relevance to wider practice.
