Alcohol Awareness Week – North Yorkshire bars warned about dangers of offering bottomless brunch

As part of alcohol awareness week – we are sharing this article in which North Yorkshire Horizons highlight the increase in the ‘bottomless brunch’ trend, the steps people can take to keep themselves safe and suggestions venues can take on board to ensure people don’t get into difficulty.

A North Yorkshire Horizons, an alcohol recovery service, is warning people about the dangers of going for a ‘bottomless brunch’.

The events allow people to drink as much as possible in a specific time window – with concerns it promotes binge drinking.

Craig Bosomworth is from Horizons: “People feel the need to try and get as much alcohol within that time frame to get the most out of the money that they have paid and obviously that can cause harms to people if they are drinking a large amount of alcohol in a short period of time.”

Craig’s suggestions to help keep people safe

“There has been a massive increase in alcohol free products within that industry so there is clearly a desire for them. So we would also promote that venues give that as an option.”

He also recommends researching what food is available: “There can be quite small portions so the actual food element isn’t maybe as large as what people think. So the alcohol probably takes a greater effect on them.”

“We’re interested in the venues taking some responsibility in promoting non alcohol products, making sure there is water on the table and those sort of harm reduction measures to make sure people aren’t getting themselves into difficulty or into harm.”
